Siemens 808D Advanced: Bullard Turning Center CNC Retrofit

The Siemens 808D Advanced control is well suited for many Turning Centers and Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs). The Advanced system provides motors with absolute feedback and continuous torque up to 40NM at 2000 rpm. Peak torques of 90NM can be achieved with these same motors. It is however important to note that auxiliary feedback such as scales is not supported with this series of control.

The application was a 46 inch Bullard Turning Center with a side tool rotary changer and a 100hp table. The original control was a GE2000 CNC with GE HYAK DC servo drives. The upgrade consisted of an 808D Advanced CNC control, (2) 40NM servo motors/drives (XZ), and (1) 15NM servo motor/drive (tool changer). The existing 100hp table drive was reused. A drive enclosure was built and installed in place of the GE 2000 enclosure. The 808D control was mounted on a pendant for easier operator access and control.
