Siemens 808D Advanced: King VTL CNC Retrofit

Before being accepted as a retrofit candidate, this King VTL (Vertical Turret Lathe) had to meet the following criteria: machine is mechanically functional, table drive will run 0-10vds or +/-10vdc command, input voltage is 460V 3 Phase, no table encoder is required, auxiliary feedback will not be used, and a safety disconnect must be supplied to feed the new enclosure and table drive.

The Siemens 808D Advanced control is well suited for many Turning Centers and Vertical Turret Lathes (VTLs). The Advanced system provides motors with absolute feedback and continuous torque up to 40NM at 2000 rpm.

The application was a King VTL with a rotary table motor/drive. These components along with the field devices were re-used per customer request. Brand new magnetics, Relay interface, IO, and V70 Digital Drives, in an electrical enclosure were provided. For the two axes on this machine, 40Nm (90Nm peak) 2000rpm, motors with absolute feedback were mounted. A wired Hand Pulse Generator pendant was also provided to give the operator the ability to jog and setup the machine with ease. Custom operator station arms can be built for any customer requirement, this particular arm gave the great flexibility.

Full engineering services were completed by MasterControls including: system design, project management, electrical prints, cnc system bill of materials, cnc source code development, system documentation, installation and power up checkout, and system commissioning/integration.
